Head deeper into the heartland of the Golden Triangle and reach the open farmland of the eastern Chiang Rai province. Visit the sleepy town well known as – the ‘Gateway to Indochina’ due to its prime trading location between Thailand, China, Laos and Myanmar, and take in the ruins of this 14th century forgotten kingdom to marvel at the ancient monuments that remain standing to this day. In the afternoon, board a ‘rocket boat’ and whiz down the Mekong River to a Laotian market where you can practise your hard-nosed bargaining technique for wannahaves to full effect.
